I don't know them, they look like the record-to-RAM version of journalist portable tape recorders of yesteryears, very rugged impression. But they record to Compact Flash. Not much of that around these days. That aspect seems a bit outdated to me.

Ira, for what it sounds like you're looking to do, I'd say just go with the Zoom H4. It's ubiquitous, it's relatively inexpensive, so if dies or you break it you won't have to cry too much. Only thing to watch out for is in airport security, it apparantly look kind of like a taser or weapon under x-ray, so best to take it out of your bag and be proactive about showing security that's it's an audio recorder. The Tascam's look OK, but I've yet to see anyone running around with one to ask what they really think.

I had a Zoom H4, then a H4n and I liked them both. I liked the H4n best. I sold it to a friend and he uses it often for videography. Recently I bought a Tascam DR100mkii and have done only one project with it so far. It seems fine. I chose it over the H4n again mostly to try something different and because it has two battery setups and a digital in. Might prove useful for recording from a digital console?

Well since we started this thread, Zoom has announced the H6, which is definitely on my wish list and if I was buying my first unit is probably what I would go with unless the funds wouldn't allow it.
