Not really a big audio gig, but cool anyway!

I now remember why I'm not a lighting guy, but got to admit, it was cool doing this. The amount of on-the-fly designing was crazy, and the schedule was absolutely off the hook! The end result is pretty cool though...

Those types of gigs can be frustrating with the limited space, art director design requirements and time constraints in a public place like that, but they can also be rewarding when it is all done.

The director/designer was cool. It was the technology getting in our way.

Using a conventional dimmer rack for the big trees (48 channels of 2400W each) to drive LED strings that barely pulled a watt gave us all kinds of problems. They just can't fade right when there's not enough load on them. As you can see, I managed to fix the problem with some hardware changes so they can fade smoothly through the bands. Had the same issue on the small trees, even though those 1200W/ch dimmers were made for LEDs. It was a very long install!

What hardware changes did you make?

The old theatre trick is to throw a par can on each circuit to give it a real load. Of course if you don't have a place to hide them, then hiding a 1K light out of sight could be a real pain.

American DJ sells a small dummy load for use with led or strobe lights they seem to work good
Don't need 1ks even a 5 watt lamp will work on most dimmers
