AMP Release?

Postby randyhyde » Mon Mar 16, 2015 12:31 pm

I'm getting ready to sell off my Mackie MCU XT Pro units, which I could never get to work (alongside the MCU Pro) with SAC.

However, if AMP could be controlled my MCU, 3 XTs, and 1 C4 units, I might be willing to hang on to them for a while. The question is, when is AMP going to be released? If it won't be sometime this year, I'm probably just going to sell the units off. If it will become available this year, I might consider moving to AMP.

I'm really vacillating between getting a GLD setup or not. However, given the competition I'm facing in my area right now, I'm not sure I'm willing to invest $10,000 in a board (plus stage boxes) and have people with Yamaha QL1 boards and line arrays underbidding me by half. OTOH, a $600 program is doable if I could finally get real control surface support (which would solve a lot of problems with guest engineers). I'd miss some features from SAC, but AMP probably has a lot of its own great things that would compensate.

However, if AMP is going to be in perpetual beta, I'd rather sell off these boxes that are sitting around taking up space.
Cheers,

Frankly if keeping guest engineers happy is a main task for you, I doubt the GLD is good choice either. And as much as I like AMP..... probably not a good choice either, except that it would save your hardware investment in SAC for a while.

If meeting the lowest common denominator of digital console is a high priority I think there is only one choice and that is Yamaha. The other more guest friendly options would probably be an AVID or Digico. While A&H and Soundcraft have some nice options they are still in the "also ran" category from what I've seen. And like it or not, I see a lot of X32 stuff out there.

Good to know. I'm only going by what I see other folks showing up with at venues and what I see as house consoles in venues. That probably has as much to do with what our local equipment vendors stock as much as what folks are asking for.

I really like the GLD and its flexibility, but I'm not sure I'd want to walk up to one and start a show from scratch. The pricing on them has recently dropped almost in half which makes them even more appealing, but I'd still think long and hard vs something like the M32. The recently announced DL32 stage box looks pretty sweet and the cost isn't ridiculous. Could probably get into the desk and stagebox for about $6k. Lots of things to like from the X32 system and the M32 gives it the hardware reliability people are afraid they won't have with the X32.

If Behringer/Midas would allow for full function on all the channels but perhaps limit the count of individual channel processing segments that could be enabled, I think the desk would be pretty killer as it'd give you up to 38 physical/virtual inputs that could be patched and almost fully processed. As-is, auxes come without dynamics processing making them a little less useful for local wireless channels beyond 32 inputs from stage.

Having toured for a year with an X32, I was impressed by the number of system techs that gave it big kudos on sound quality. I even had a few OO's mention they were seeing people prefer using the house X32 over an M7 given both in inventory.

That said, if you had to meet riders, the QL5 would be a pretty solid desk as it's fairly close to the CL series and gives you the Dugan auto-mixing for corporate work.
http://softwareaudioconsole.wikidot.com The start of a wiki. It's slow going and there's a ton of info that should be in there yet.
Biggest item is the Command Reference on how to do most actions within SAC. It's 90% of what you need for UI proficiency.

It has faders and channel strips, which would satisfy 90% of the guest engineers I've seen.
AMP, supposedly, would also have this capability, which is the only reason I'd consider AMP, to be honest (plus being able to reuse hardware, of course).

This would be done by my engineers (just as it is with SAC). So, again, it's the 90% solution.

At this point, however, I'm not going to invest a lot of money in a new board until I'm pretty sure I'm still going to be doing this five years from now. $600 for AMP is probably something I could swing to get the control surface issue resolved. However, if it's going to stay in beta test for another year or so, it may be too late for me. I'll have moved on (to a different console or to something else).

Still wondering if anyone has any idea when a real release will come?
Cheers,

No date has been set. Trust that if Brett or Joe, Frank, Jeremy or myself do not know, then it probably has no set release date. I talk with Bob about this issue all the time. He is aware of the perception and is doing his best.
