Yes I saw that. My point was even if that is true, I doubt Sir Elton is personally picking out consoles and from what I read it sounded more like that was just the recording rig. The person picking out the console is whomever Elton hired to make that happen and how much do you bet that the person he hired is one of Bob's early adoptors and that is why SAW and SAC are on that tour. If SAC or SAW for that matter was making any big splashes we would see it popping up in trade rags, which it was very briefly before it sizzled out. Of course the scrutiny of verteran sound folks from various parts of the industry, that came along with some of that public notice is probably directly related to the number of folks showing up on his forum and calling his BS for what it is, along with bringing in higher expectations since they know better.

Oh ..and good to know he would never exagerate anything like the price of the PM1D he says they replaced ... 100+K new - now 50-60K.
Well, I got a better deal for ya: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-PM1D-80-X-32-Channel-Audio-Mixing-Console-/181747269447?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a50fb3f47#ht_44wt_1323 $9100 max.

Any idiot that would use this for a national touring act like that deserves the unemployment he's about to find himself at when it inevitibly crashes midshow.

That's kinda funny. What can you do with just the surface? Patch in a tape deck? Use it as a training tool?

Why do you think that is just the control surface for sale? It looked to be the entire console with processing racks to me.

There is another ad I saw for processing racks that were about 9K for 3 racks. I know when the tore down the Metrodome here in minneapolis, they had 2 fully configured systems (96+ channels, etc.) that went on the auction block. One was used, one was brand new in boxes - it was the spare system that never got used in all those years. I think they went for less than 15K each. I was tempted, but then again, I'm a gear hoarder.

Did get to use one on tour once .... Great board, but couldn't imagine touring with all those racks and the risk of something going wrong in an interconnect - you know - kind of like relying on SAC not to crash...

They were popular for several years on Broadway Show tours before the Digicos pretty much took over everything. So I suspect they were fairly reliable or you wouldn't see them on those shows. Of course Broadway tours are used to carrying spare parts around from all those years of dealing with Cadacs and compared to those beasts anything is lighter. So maybe they just carried spare parts and dealt with it, don't know.

I did not dig deep enough into those photos. You're right. But the sale has been stopped with no bids. I wonder what happened. A mistake in the listing, probably.

One of the first venues to own one is here in Seattle. Still going strong. I use it regularly. Very nice mix desk.

Funny story about that desk...

I was on tour and hit a small theater that had one of those (somewhere in CA I think, but it all kinda blends together).
The theater regularly appealed to the older crusty type that decided that they would solve volume problems by choking the crap out of all the amps so it "couldn't" get too loud.
I couldn't get 90dbC at FOH with my tuning music - I called bullshit on this and told them they had to open it up. They came back with the "no" or "we can't" crap.

Brought my PM out to get involved and he asked how much could I get out. I just reached over and slammed all the faders to full (my input and stereo output). The meters went solid red - nothing moving off the endstop. It still didn't get any louder, but there was absolutely no distortion! We both looked like we couldn't believe what we were hearing. I have never seen a desk that overdriven that didn't go to hell (which is exactly what I wanted it to do of course). I was amazed it didn't overload the inputs of the processors either, but apparently it didn't.

End of the day - I got the limiters opened up by 10db - never actually broke 92 during the show, but at least I didn't have to compress the hell out of it to get it. We almost had a nice easy day - we were ready to use the "engineer shall have exclusive access" clause to pack up and go home for full pay - they finally realized what that meant :)
