SAC 4.0 has arrived

Discussions about the use and operation of SAC (Software Audio Console)

I will admit to being somewhat (gulp) excited to see the touch view. Of all the disappointments I've experienced with SAC, I think this is the biggest one. There was so much promise with that product, it kind of saddens me.

I personally don't have all that much use for touch. Yeah it can be nice to wander around the space to tweak system balance during rehearsals but otherwise the whole tablet app thing for my work is just a toy. (not that I don't understand why it's such a great tool for the concert sound world) Yet I did get excited for a moment as well I will admit. And for perhaps 5 minutes or so contemplated plunking down the $100 just for the sake of supporting SAC's development because it really did serve me reasonably well for several years.

But then reality set in and not only did I remember that I have not even touched any of the RML software in well over a year but I figured that what few new tools were implemented were done in the typical SAC/SAW way which is to just take the same tired old code and UI design and bend it just enough to make something kinda new. Plus I realized that there wasn't a single useful feature in there for what I do except perhaps the higher channel count. No real DCAs, no Sequence view or any of the other more theatrical tools that were all promised long ago, long before the Monitor View thing in fact. I could make use of the multiple MIDI ports maybe, but I bet you still have to use multiple identical units, unlike AMP where I can have up to 8 controllers all on separate MIDI ports and if I wanted it could be 8 different makes and models.

It really is unfortunate since I agree the software had a lot of potential.

Oh well at least Randy Hyde can make use of this update and use all his Mackie surfaces now. There's one plus. :)

Tablet use for me is a big deal. I use it for almost every sound check and monitor check. Nothing like standing next to the artist and hearing what they are hearing. It's also become a pretty crucial tool for super small venues and some corporate type stuff. The only reason it's important is because it's possible. Obviously before the audio/ipad revolution we simply made things work, but this new tool is very useful and will not be going away.
Every tablet (ipad) remote that I've used has an eq with a graphical display that you can drag with your finger. Once you get used to that it's hard to go back.

Totally understand and get it.

As someone else mentioned it's like Bob L has never even looked at what the competition is doing. Anyone that's not looking at what the Yamaha Elephant in the room is doing is going to be stepped on. ;)

At least he's consistent - what an asshole.

I did learn something - you can say anything to call your customer stupid as long as you put a smiley face after it! Thanks for the lesson Bob.

The new version of SAC is a steaming pile of regurgitated, non working shit! :D
You should only operate it like we say or else you're stupid! :)
I can't believe my users are so stupid to keep sending me money so I can keep telling them how wrong they are!

Bob's own posts will be the best sales tool for AMP there ever could be.
Of course, the fact that it's a superior product helps!
I have already done more national acts with it than SAC and have had ZERO crashes. PERIOD.

I'm mildly tempted to spend the extra to get the monitor view and updated VST support that does cause issues for me. OTOH I haven't used SAC except for 3 orchestra concerts with expanded channel counts since I got my x32 setup. I just ordered my AMP beta keys and I'm thinking I'm probably better off with that despite knowing that I'll miss the VST plugin availability.
http://softwareaudioconsole.wikidot.com The start of a wiki. It's slow going and there's a ton of info that should be in there yet.
Biggest item is the Command Reference on how to do most actions within SAC. It's 90% of what you need for UI proficiency.

Just for the record, the quick start guide for AMP is 2 pieces of paper.

Which basically says something like, run the host, click a button, select your sound device and then start the engine. Now start the GUI (assuming you've already run the Visual C redistributal). And go into the GUI preferences and set your IP address if you're not running the GUI on the host.

To configure the server's configuration you go to a menu and run the Wizard and tell it how many inputs and various buses you want, etc.. and click the create button.

That may not be "out of the box", but it's pretty damn fast and I can do all that faster than I typed this.

I'm mildly tempted to upgrade to for VST and the monitor view, but I am terrified of the touch view... VST is a deal breaker for me...

I'm going to go ahead and preserve the full thread. After my last reply, it'll probably be cleansed or deleted.
