Brett Brandon SAW Question

Postby Craig » Sun Apr 21, 2013 11:54 am

Since I don't post on the SAW forum anymore, I'll put an answer up here. SAW will read WAV and AIFF files natively, but nothing else. The manual should be in the Misc download section of the SAW webpage.

Oh, it supports every type of audio format. All you have to do is convert it first. Full support for all audio formats is coming in the next release or maybe the one after that.
http://softwareaudioconsole.wikidot.com The start of a wiki. It's slow going and there's a ton of info that should be in there yet.
Biggest item is the Command Reference on how to do most actions within SAC. It's 90% of what you need for UI proficiency.

That's only half as funny as the fact that he thinks every editing app is actually resaving the mp3 file (and reencoding it) every time it opens it. I don't write code, but I know you don't have to do that to playback an mp3 file. If you did, everytime you played your mp3 library the files would sound worse each time... like an old LP. :)

Maybe there are some editors that do this I don't know... but none that I know of and it sounds like pure bullshit to me.

I do know that major playback applications for theatre don't do this. They read the file and convert it in real time. Nothing happens to the original file.

To play an MP3 it is decoded in real time but to be able to EDIT it it must be completely decoded then edited then encoded again. Only the most simple trimming can be done without complete re encoding of the file

But with non-destructive editing, I believe most editors handle it by converting it to a non-compressed file and then using that file for a reference. No changes are actually made to it (the same as an original wav file in SAW), there is only a final mix file that could be converted into an mp3 if wanted. Only single track editors like Soundforge or Wavelab would actually have the change the original mp3 by re-encoding it.

Thanks Craig! My point exactly!

Just because you open an mp3 file and edit it, doesn't necessarily mean you have to/or will save it as an mp3 file again. Even in Sound Forge.... ever hear of Save As?

Sorry, I'm having a hard time believing this conversation is even necessary. Sigh....

If we are all pros here then we would not start with an mp3 anyway :!:
Or at least under :protest:

Good point!

I don't really give a shit if SAW plays mp3 files or not. But I do have to deal with them, because I'm not always working with recording original content that was just recorded. Sometimes a director insists on trying out some mp3 file they have on their computer, or in most cases these days it's an m4p or whatever Apple uses for iTunes now. And once in a while they hand you one of the old versions that has the DRM with it, so you have to go into iTunes, burn a CD and then rip it.

But when I read nonsense about compressed files being rewritten every time.... sorry I can't help but call bullshit when I smell it... :horse:

sawstudiouser.com - the best fertilizer on the web :) I have to admit, it is quite funny reading some of the stuff over there these days. I suppose with no bugs being reported anymore, there probably won't be any more releases either.
